When we adopted Hazel from the San Diego pound we thought she was a mut. As we were filling out the paperwork the woman who worked behind the desk there said, "Congrats, you have a pure breed Australian Cattle Dog! She was left in our drop box last night." We didn't know too much about Australian Cattle Dogs (or Blue Heelers) but we have learned so much about the breed since having Hazel. She is extremely smart, athletic, unwaiveringly loyal...and she sheds like no other dog I have ever seen (and the fun part is that her fur is white, black, and brown so there is no avoiding it). It is hard to deal with shedding in the winter. We try to vacuum as much as possible and I brush her fur with a horse brush outside to remove the goose feathers (as we call them). Hazel is allowed up on a few items of furniture in our house and where she lies, these have proven to look the coolest, and keep the fur contained. Bunny Williams, the famous interior designer, also uses the same things for her dogs in her Connecticut home.

I also can't do this post without including a picture of Bella, my family's beloved dog. We adopted her from Angel Memorial SPCA in Boston 9 years ago but she still seems so much like a puppy.
I love you Bella.
